Baraye

“We are no longer afraid; we fight”

There is a reason that art and literature are so often targeted by those with power (or those who want power). Art, music, theater, literature, stories... these are timeless methods of communication with a depth that plain words can't. They reach into a soul and give you emotion, empathy, meaning... often reaching a resistant brain when nothing else can.

This song is so powerful, the original artist was reportedly jailed for it. And this is nothing new.

It is difficult when there is so much pain in the world, and I have so little agency over most of that pain. But I can boost the signal, be a vocal witness, and make sure the global fight for equality isn't easily dismissed.

#NikaShakarami#IranProtests#WomensRightsAreHumanRights#MahsaAmini Iranian American musician Rana Mansour performs an English language translation of “Baraye” by Shervin Hajipour. The song has become an anthem of solidarity in #Iran. If you don’t speak Arabic, I encourage you to listen to this version first, then listen to the original. You can find them both on Spotify and YouTube.
